BXTRA with Amaurys Grullon

On September 26, 2017, I had the pleasure of meeting with the mastermind behind the fashion-forward brand,  Bronx Native.

Amaurys Grullon, graduate from The School of Visual Arts, was trying to find ways to best represent the borough through apparel. He noticed that the Bronx did not have anything to really represent the pride of their hometown. Other areas in New York City, such as Brooklyn, have been able to represent their borough on different platforms, and felt the Bronx deserved the same. Thus, Bronx Native was born in 2014. The brand name was chosen because of its catchiness.

Amaurys also works alongside his sister, Roselyn who is currently studying at the Fashion Institute. Amaurys explains that it is great working with his sister because of their familiarity with each other. The two have the same passion of bringing greatness to the Bronx through apparel, but different skillsets, this allows them to bounce ideas off each other.

Until the fall of 2017, all of the sales for Bronx Native went through their website bronxnative.com. In October of 2017, Bronx Native had a two-week pop-op shop on Lincoln Ave. in the South Bronx. After a successful turn-out, the Bronx Native team was granted full access to have a permanent shop at that location.

During the interview, Amaurys shared six words that he believes is the key to success : ” You get what you put out.” This is the advice that was given to him by a professor at the School of Visual Arts. Amaurys shares the same advice to those who are in the process of pursuing their dreams and stresses for people to, “put in the work and put in the hours.” In doing so, he believes all of the effort will pay off.

For Amaurys, he takes pleasure in being an entrepreneur. He favors the ability of being creative and setting his own hours. Although his schedule is more flexible than the standard 9-5, Amaurys is not exempt from the daily grind and explains that he sometimes has sleepless nights.

I think a major takeaway from this conversation is to respect the hustle. Sometimes, we can get caught up in wondering how an individual or a team becomes successful. Nothing happens overnight; hard-work, sacrifice, and dedication goes into seeing positive results.  If there is something that you are passionate about and want to pursue, you must keep your head straight even when everything around you seems to be going haywire.

When asked if he could be extra something, Amaurys responded that he would be, “extra extra.” Amaurys prides himself on the hard work that he has put into Bronx Native and if he could, he would like to dedicate more time and effort to the every day hustle.

Amaurys has a message for those who are not familiar with the Bronx, ” We showcase the Bronx, the raw Bronx, we take in the good, the bad, and the ugly and we believe that its beautiful.
